Just a few minutes (by car or by bus) underneath the city walls of Mdina is Ta’Qali, a centre for Maltese arts and crafts. It would be not quite correct to call it an “artists’ village”, because it is more of an accumulation of individual artists as well as small companies who “colonized” the old little hangars on the derelict British Military Airfield. Even after years it still looks quite improvised, and the streets and paths are only partially in a good shape, but inside the hangars and simplistic buildings one can watch glassblowers, silversmiths, and potters at their work. Besides, most of the craft here is considerably cheaper than in the tourist shops in the cities and holiday villages, and – particularly off-season – there is a chance to have a personal chat with the craftsmen…
