The Maltese Archipelago lies virtually in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, some 93kms south of the Italian island of Sicily. Yet Malta is just a few hours' flying time from most mainland European cities and has excellent intercontinental connections. The national airline, Air Malta, operates flights to and from all the major airports in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, with many low cost airline also offering flights for fantastic prices. Air Malta are currently providing a pre-booked extra sports equipment bag up to 32 kilos for 15 Euros (price as of Summer 2010).
The Islands are included in several cruise itineraries and provide an excellent base or stop-over for sailing. You can also get here on a scheduled ferry direct from several Mediterranean ports including Genova, Civitavecchia (mainland Italy) and Pazallo, Catania, Licata and Palermo (Sicily).

Malta, although a small country, has many amazing things to see and explore above water too! Malta has a very cheap and efficient bus service, with many routes that will provide links to most tourist attractions.
